House prices rise 1.2 per cent in May
Fri, 29 May 2009 By Tom Lloyd

Nationwide has recorded a 1.2 per cent house price rise in May, and says there are signs the market is improving.
The figure is up on a 0.3 per cent decline recorded in April, and takes the average price of a UK home to £154,016. It also reduces the annual decline from 15 per cent recorded in April to an 11.3 per cent drop.
Chief economist Martin Gahbauer said: ‘Although the short-term trend in house prices has clearly improved from where it was at the beginning of the year, it is too early to say that the market is turning definitively.
‘During the downturn of the early 1990s, there were many months during which prices rose, only to fall back down again in subsequent periods.’
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors said the figures provide further evidence that the housing market is stabilising, but said it would be ‘premature’ to assume they will continue to rise.
Chief economist Simon Rubinsohn said: ‘The lack of new supply of houses coming onto the market is a key driver for the current turnaround in prices.’
