Highest number of first-time buyer transactions since 2007

The number of property transactions from first-time buyers reached the highest levels in March since 2007, according to LSL Property Services.
Based on data collected across the UK from the company’s Your Move and Reeds Rains estate agencies, the research found that the number of transactions in March climbed to 31,400, up from 22,200 in February. This was more than a 40 per cent increase. The average purchase price in March was £143,906, down from £145,122 in February.
The transactions were up by 60.2 per cent year-on-year and the research found that the average first-time buyer deposit fell by 10 per cent in a year to £23,802.
David Newnes, director of Your Move and Reeds Rains, suggested this is due to the government ‘stepping in’ with help to buy.
‘Extending the equity loan scheme will encourage more first-time buyers to opt for new builds,’ he said. ‘This goes some way to guarantee future demand for home builders, thus encouraging them to develop more new projects.
‘Even so, the scale of the home building revival must be up-scaled, in order to give the next generation of would-be first-time buyers a fair opportunity to  buy their own home.’
This comes as mortgage applicants face tougher questions about their lifestyle, under new rules that take effect on Saturday.
Questions from lenders about customers’ regular outgoings – including childcare costs and even haircuts – could be included in affordability checks.
